Food Fest

Food Fest

The scene on the Paramount lot, at the end of the joyous day guests enjoyed a concert.

The Los Angeles Times Celebration of Food & Wine was the perfect end of summer fiesta. While slightly, err rather, gluttonous, what better way to experience the joy of community than breaking bread with your fellow Los Angeles brethren? Set on the large and fun Paramount Studios, the scene was an explosion of sensory delight. While the majority of the vendors were food and wine related, there were all types of folks peddling their wares from financial advisors and psychics (one and the same, really) to every different type of food cart imaginable to the VIP section where a $125 ticket could get you tastings from twenty-five different top-notch local restaurants and more sips of wine than one should ever mix at one time in a single stomach. If you could tear yourself away from experiencing the wine, beer, liquor and food then you could learn a thing or two at the various speaking panels and cooking demonstrations. The delightful day was wrapped up with a concert by indie favorite, She and Him. For it’s first year, this event was incredibly well done and should have a permanent spot on your annual calendar of culinary adventures.

Ago Fantastico

Ago Fantastico

The scene at Ago: We love the bar to grab a bite, meet some interesting people or enjoy a couple glasses of wine

What makes a restaurant last? Why do some restaurants continue to prosper while other are a flash then they burnout?

In the Restaurant Issue we dive into some of the more revered dining establishments of Los Angeles and we also explore some of the new restaurants who are currently hot, but we wonder if they will be here next decade.

First up is perennial favorite, Ago. We love this restaurant and are not surprised that they are popular as ever — thirteen years after opening! Ago is the perfect restaurant because of their immense graciousness, super-fun atmosphere and delectable cuisine. You know that you are welcome, that you will be well taken care of, and that you’ll have a great time. You’ll be whisked into your table or you can hang out at the bar — either way, their first line of business is to make sure that you are comfortable and that you have everything you need. This atmosphere of graciousness could be pinned on Italian hospitality and it’s a welcome reprieve from “Hollywood” attitude. The team at Ago are professional and efficient with warmth and kindness oozing from their every pore.

The steak!! Amazingly delicious

After you are seated with your favorite glass of wine to enjoy, prepare to taste food that is just downright delicious. It is decadent yet feels healthy. The langoustine appetizer is served with steamed greens and the flavor and texture combination of a bite of the langoustine mixed with the delicate fresh greens is absolutely divine. A light shower of lemon juice and you’ve got food perfection. The specials at Ago are consistently exciting. Gentle folds of delicate homemade pasta envelop asparagus tortellini, in a light creamy cheese sauce with shaved black truffles on every bite.

Delightful pasta

Another great thing about Ago is the scene. There’s always an interesting crowd filled with power and beauties. There are frequently famous people — we’ve spotted everyone from Meredith Grey to Jodie Foster. Everybody who’s anybody is drawn to the positive energy of the place. There is some of the usual Hollywood ridiculousness with bizarre body parts, really short skirts on some ladies and guys with lots of hair gel, but the people watching is half the fun.

This January 2011, Ago will close for the first two weeks while undergoing an exciting and transformational remodel.  The patio will stay the same – of course – but prepare to see booths in the main dining room.  The kitchen will be partially closed off with new cabinetry, there will be a new soundproofed ceiling, and the bar will change.  They are even installing a flat screen television behind the bar so you’ll have a new place to watch the game.  You’ll hardly be able to recognize the place with their new look but, thank goodness, the amazing cuisine will remain the same.

General Manager Stefano Carella with legendary chef Agostino Sciandri

Ago was started over a decade a go by renowned chef and restaurateur Agostino Sciandri. “We have the best clientele in Los Angeles,” Sciandri says. “We do Hollywood, but we also cater to businesses, hotels and tourists.”

He notes that he’ll never stray too far from his roots — authentic Tuscan-style Italian cuisine. Sciandri says. “What people really want is the delicious, high-quality but basic food that Italians eat every day.”

The 65-year-old Sciandri was born on a farm in the countryside of Aulla, Italy, between the food-famous regions of Tuscany and Emilia Romagna. There his family grew everything from wine to grains and raised chickens, ducks and pigs. “My mother was a terrific a cook,” Sciandri says. “She made everything fresh from our farm. She made pasta and ravioli, chicken, lots of soups.

“I wasn’t interested in cooking then,” he adds, “but I learned from her what good food should taste like.”
Sciandri left home at 18 and went to cooking school, but not because he was interested in learning to be a great chef. “I was young, and country life was boring,” he says. “I didn’t have any idea what I wanted to do. I took a cooking class and it turned out that I was kind of good at it.”

After graduating in 1961, Sciandri moved to London, where he worked for nearly a decade, mostly at French restaurants, including at the Savoy Hotel. He then moved with his wife and three small children to Forte dei Marmi, a seaside Tuscany resort near where he had grown up, and spent the next 13 years there as a chef in one the area’s top hotels.

Seeking an adventure, a challenge and a change of pace, Sciandri moved to Los Angeles in 1985. At the time, there were not a lot of Italian restaurants in L.A., and those that did exist were of the red-and-white-checkerboard-tablecloth, chicken-parmesan, spaghetti- and-meatball variety.

“Lots of garlic and lots of grease,” Sciandri recalls. “I wanted to open a Tuscan-style Italian restaurant and really add something different to the restaurant scene.”

The famous patio - where love and business deals bloom

Seeking an adventure, a challenge and a change of pace, Sciandri moved to Los Angeles in 1985. At the time, there were not a lot of Italian restaurants in L.A., and those that did exist were of the red-and-white-checkerboard-tablecloth, chicken-parmesan, spaghetti- and-meatball variety.

“Lots of garlic and lots of grease,” Sciandri recalls. “I wanted to open a Tuscan-style Italian restaurant and really add something different to the restaurant scene.” Which is exactly what he did!

Sciandri went to work for three years as Executive Chef at Il Gardino in Beverly Hills, the city’s first Tuscan-style restaurant. He then opened Toscana in Brentwood, where he was executive chef and co-owner for 13 years.

Both restaurants had a huge impact on Italian dining in L.A. “When we first came to L.A, the old-style, southern Italian cooking was all people knew about,” says Piero Topputo, executive chef and partner with Sciandri at Caffe Roma in Beverly Hills. “Agostino brought the Tuscan style of cooking here — very light, very simple. He introduced new food items that we imported from Europe, things like buffalo mozzarella, branzino, radicchio, arugula, porcini mushrooms. This influenced how people in L.A. thought about Italian food.”

While at Toscana, Sciandri also launched the highly successful Rosti chain of restaurants, based on the popular deli-style rosticcerias in Italy.

In those days, Toscana was considered the top Italian restaurant in L.A. and, as it happened, it was a favorite dining spot of Robert De Niro’s when he was in town. The actor, who already owned, among others, Nobu and Tribeca Grill in New York, was exploring opening a restaurant in Los Angeles, so he approached Sciandri. And in 1997, the two of them, along with Hollywood heavyweights Bob and Harvey Weinstein and Tony and Ridley Scott, opened his namesake trattoria, Ago, in West Hollywood on the fabled Melrose Avenue.

Ago became an instant success, attracting a Hollywood hipster set that gathered for late-night dining. Over a decade later, its bustling bar, charming patio and elegantly casual dining room still draw crowds night after night.

Community in Los Angeles

Community in Los Angeles

What is community in the city of Los Angeles?

We are such an apparent disjointed mass of land and people that it is difficult to see the whole picture. Consider this: we have some of the richest rich and some of the poorest poor, and every type of difference in ethnicity, heritage, ambition, dreams, beliefs, religions and traditions. We have fabulously interesting populations from the Middle East and Latin America. We have people who sleep on the street after injecting their veins with their hit for the day. We hear rumors that the same drugs are being consumed by members of the Hollywood elite who sit in the hills peering at their wrinkles as they age away. There are people who take immense pride in their personal and community accomplishments and those who suffer from horrendous self-loathing. So, the question is, how do we make ourselves into a community? What and who do we stand for? Who are we committed to?

People argue that Los Angeles has no soul, that our town is a place where individuals live separate existences, chasing the dream, the day, or the rush of existence. And, in part this characterization is true. However our larger community is based upon the smaller neighborhoods, the communities that are held together by a particular culture or language. These communities do work for their schools, for their children, and when there is a disaster, for one another. It is time to recognize this larger community, made up of the smaller communities, and come together so that our generous soul is obvious to all. The eighties are way long gone; it’s time to start demonstrating how we care about each other and our community. There are skills and riches beyond belief in this town. So, put down the pen, turn off the TV, cell phone, and computer, curb your vice and step outside to meet your neighbors. Hold your political representatives accountable — get to know them, know who they know, understand their influences — be their influence. This is our town. Let’s make it fantastic.

LAX Magazine got to know some people who are leading the way to better communities. From the scary streets of South Central to the rolling hills of Malibu, join us in getting to know some of our community leaders.

Jimmy Valenzuela has devoted his life to public service and works to develop and maintain programs aimed at keeping our economically disadvantaged youth striving for success.

JIMMY VALENZUELA - Mentoring Youth

Jimmy Valenzuela is one of our community heroes. He has devoted his life to public service and works to develop and maintain programs aimed at keeping our economically disadvantaged youth striving for success. He was born and raised in the “hood” and his example of staying away from street crime and working on a healthy, happy, productive life works as a positive force for his message. Because he is “one of them”, local residents trust him. He is always there, working diligently with young and old residents alike, to educate them about a life outside of poverty and crime and into a life of education, success and giving back.

Jimmy is laid back and friendly and, no doubt, has seen it all. Born and raised in Boyle Heights, he and his family lived in Estrada Courts — one of the toughest, most gang based neighborhoods in the city. Unlike many in his neighborhood, Jimmy stayed in school and eventually graduated from California State University, Los Angeles.

Jimmy worked as the Executive Director of the Los Angeles Youth Opportunity Movement. He was at the helm for construction, planning, opening, programming and staffing for the $12M Boyle Heights Technology Youth Center. The Boyle Heights Technology Youth Center currently offers courses in web design, film editing and animation as well as housing a state-of-the-art recording studio. Jimmy ensured that the Tech Center offered high-quality programming to meet the needs of the community. One of the highlights is the music program that was developed in conjunction with Dr. Shelia Balkin, Jeff Greenberg/The Village Recorder, Harold Owens/Grammy Foundation, and Don Griffin/West L.A. Music.

These days, Jimmy acts as the Deputy Director of HIRE L.A.’s Youth, a program initiated by the City of Los Angeles Council and Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa. Their goal is to connect young adults in Los Angeles with available work opportunities and to encourage positive work experience along with on-the-job training. This program focuses on preparing young adults, age 16-24, for the 21st century workforce and providing Los Angeles businesses with the most qualified entry-level applicants.

Jimmy is an example of how one person can make a huge difference in our community. His dedication to helping others should be a shining example for us all.

Kathleen Rawson, CEO of Bayside District Corporation runs a well oiled organization that helps our community by keeping the area clean and graffiti-free.

KATHLEEN RAWSON – White Glove Lady

Kathleen Rawson is a dynamic woman who is full of life. She is another example of living right. With her bright blue eyes and sensible shoes you can tell she’s a woman who gets things done. Good thing too, because she has a pretty important job. Kathleen is in charge of the Bayside District, which is a civic and business organization responsible for the Third Street Promenade in Santa Monica. We sat down and got to know Kathleen and found out what motivates her to keep the streets clean.

Bayside District is a downtown business area within the confines of Ocean Avenue to 7th Avenue and Highway 10 and Wilshire Boulevard in Santa Monica. Kathleen says that Santa Monica is “a sanctuary from urban sprawl”. It is eight vibrant square miles where you can walk and ride bikes with ease. Bayside District helps this community by keeping the area clean, free of graffiti and promotes events that bring the community together. It is run by a board, which includes private and public sector leaders. They are united by their desire to develop their vision of a clean, friendly, safe, and entertaining community and Kathleen is the keeper of that vision.

She says that Santa Monica has a big heart and is well funded to address the issue of their homeless population. They work hard to try to identify folks who are merely down on their luck versus the people suffering from socially inappropriate behavior. Happily, Santa Monica has a very low crime rate — especially true for aggressive crimes.

Third Street Promenade has existed since 1997 and has had a “phenomenal evolution”. The development came about with a $13M public sector investment along with several billions of private funding resulting in the dynamic environment of today. The Bayside District (Kathleen’s group) was created to protect the vitality of the project.

The day that we met she was on her way to have lunch with the Santa Monica Police Chief. She says that everyday on the job is different and that her team spends time looking at ways to enhance the experience of downtown Santa Monica. Of course, she is thrilled at the opening of Santa Monica Place and the future vitality of the area.

Clarence A. Daniels, Jr. (sitting) and son, Anwar Daniels (standing) encourages women and minority owned business to get involved with the business side of airport concessions.

CLARENCE A. DANIELS, JR. – To Whom Much Is Given, Much Is Expected

Clarence A. Daniels, Jr. has owned and operated CMS Hospitality since 1992. His company provides concession services at airports throughout the country. Clarence is a successful business executive who continues to focus on and give back to the community. We sat down with Clarence and discussed the concept of community in Los Angeles including the challenges and opportunities of giving back.

Clarence has a background as a civil rights lawyer who then ventured into business, working as a top executive for the Marriott Corporation. While he was a full-fledged member of corporate America, he never lost his focus on equality, fairness and leveling the playing field. When Marriott bought Host International in the early ‘80’s, Clarence had the opportunity to learn the airport concessions business. Today, CMS Hospitality employs 150 people and has operations in six different airports including Los Angeles (LAX) and Atlanta (ATL).

CMS Hospitality has benefited from the Airport Concessions Disadvantaged Business Enterprise (ACDBE) program, which was started by the federal government and embraced by cities, like L.A., to encourage women and minority owned businesses to get involved with the business side of airport concessions. Because of this, Clarence feels that he needs to keep circulating the benefits to others. His strong commitment to community involvement compels him to actively take on paid interns from tough local high schools such as Belmont and Freemont. He does this for several reasons including training kids in the growing industry of travel and tourism and showing the interns the potential for minority business ownership.

Clarence feels that part of the problem with community in Los Angeles is that there is no central city. L.A. is a conglomeration of many smaller cities in one — it’s hard to not get isolated. People really have to put forth an effort to get involved. Clarence and his wife work very hard to be an active part of the community including sitting on several boards like the Los Angeles Urban League, Greater Los Angeles African American Chamber of Commerce (GLAAACC) and he’s an active member of the 100 Black Men of Los Angeles — a mentorship organization dedicated to getting disadvantaged youth into the University of California system.

He does feel that things are getting better in L.A. and that, as a community, we are becoming more engaged. The refurbishment of Hollywood and the revitalization of downtown are helping to make L.A. a more attactive community. The preservation of some incredible buildings creates new interest in the distinctive architecture of decades long gone. More people are becoming involved in the debates around public education. In the past, people have written off L.A. Unified School District and now there are more people paying attention to the problems and solutions, including notable philanthropists such as Eli and Edythe Broad. “We’re not going to have a vital city, unless we have a well educated work force and people who have a high level of civic mindedness. Getting engaged in the political system is important.” says Clarence.

Mark Geragos (left) and Brian Kabateck (right) are preserving historical buildings and supporting the arts.

BRIAN KABATECK & MARK GERAGOS – One Block At A Time

Brian Kabateck and Mark Geragos are two big time downtown L.A. lawyers who are doing their part to make downtown Los Angeles a better place. Known for their high profile clients such as the late Michael Jackson, Brian and Mark are preserving some of our most historical architectural gems, supporting the arts, and expanding a sense of community into the downtown sector. They feel that downtown L.A. is really improving and they want to do their part to make it safe and vibrant with culture. Downtown didn’t used to be a destination that it now is. There is a growing sense of community among the business owners and residents — even the transient community.

Brian and Mark agree, “This is our community”. They have purchased two historic buildings around the 7th Street corridor. Their first acquisition was the Engine Company No. 28 on Figueroa. The building houses the Company No. 28 restaurant on the first floor and Mark and Brian’s law offices on the higher levels. Two years ago they bought the Fine Arts Building, which Mark calls “the finest architectural gem in Los Angeles”. Both buildings are historically significant and with a restaurant in one and an art gallery in the other, it’s a great area for entertaining with friends. But their community efforts are not limited to preserving historical buildings and supporting the arts. Because they are both lawyers, they are able to use their position and skills to help those less fortunate.

Brian’s specific focus is the courts. He feels that they must be made more accessible for all people to use, to get a “fair day in court”. People can’t be evicted from their homes without an opportunity to be heard. Brian sits on the board for Inner City Law Center which is a non profit, public interest law firm that helps the homeless, residents of substandard housing, and displaced veterans. Their website tells horrific stories of slumlords and poor people living in unspeakable conditions with vermin and rodents. It’s illegal for landlords to rent out property that are uninhabitable, but some poor or nearly homeless people feel they have no choice. Brian says that the slumlord situation needs to be reviewed and prosecuted wherever possible. Mental health courts need to be available and open so that people with critical issues can be fairly adjudicated. He also wants nursing homes to be regulated better.

Mark feels that we need to make micro and macro efforts to better the community. He hosts fundraiser events at his house and donates his time for free legal help. He considers 7th and Fig more of his home than his residence in Pasadena and he’s got a homeless buddy who lives on the HSBC corner. Mark gives him money in exchange for keeping the area clean. He feels that we need to make societal change, there has to be a city wide, county wide, community wide concern. The solution for them is one block at a time, taking each block and owning it.

Melody Bar & Grill owner Christian Warren (far right) and staff run the neighborhood gathering spot.

CHRISTIAN WARREN & BOBBY HUGHES – The Local Proprietor

Running any business is no small task. The paperwork, long hours, taxes, government, and employees can take all the fun out of what started as something you love. But you carry on, creating jobs, and stimulating the economy the best way you can. That is the life of local small business owner.

One of the small local businesses in the LAX/Westchester community is The Melody Bar & Grill. Christian Warren and Bobby Hughes run the neighborhood gathering spot and they’ve done an amazing job transforming the place. It used to be rather scary complete with gang related violence in the parking lot. These days, there is a dress code, more mellow music, and way better food. The Melody Bar & Grill is serving up some of the best food in the area and has incredible live music on Wednesday nights. They have made vast improvements to the venue such as installing windows and an inviting patio area on the Sepulveda side of the building.

Christian and Bobby are old school, Westside, bar industry guys — formerly of Ma’Kai in Santa Monica. They say that there is a strong sense of community among the service industry folks who work in the same areas. The community of bartenders on the Westside is like one big family and it’s not uncommon for everyone to chip in or organize a fundraiser if someone has unmanageable medical bills.

They have had their work cut out for them to try and invigorate the property and change the unwanted clientele — while keeping the regulars, and while staying open for business. Overcoming an unfortunate reputation, they have succeeded in turning a formerly seedy establishment into a destination for which they are proud. They are committed to high quality in their food, drink and entertainment and look forward to being a safe and fun community destination for years to come.

Ashley Diestel, Neighborhood Council Officer finds great pleasure in knowing that she’s helping the voice of the community to be heard.

ASHLEY DIESTEL – The Youth
Generation Y’ers are alternately accused of being spoiled, entitled, needy, of poor work ethic, and of being self-absorbed. So, it can be hard for older age groups not to slap themselves on the forehead while asking, “What is this world coming to?” Especially in a city like Los Angeles, where most of the young role-models are movie stars and pop singers, it’s easy for the youth to lose sight of the importance of being involved in the community and giving back on an individual level. However, we recently had the pleasure of speaking with Ashley Diestel, and she just might be able to change your perception of Generation Y.

Ashley’s history of giving back began when she was just a teenager at California High School in San Ramon. Aside from being involved in student leadership and a peer helper, she joined the YMCA’s Youth and Government Program in order to get a sense of what it’s like to be an elected official. Youth and Government allows students the opportunity to serve in a model government process from local, all the way up to international levels and actually meet at the state capitol to deliberate bills written by the students during the year.

After graduating from Cal High her interest in government only grew stronger as she relocated to the Los Angeles area to major in Political Science and History at Loyola Marymount University. During the course of her collegiate career she worked for three elected officials and landed a position at the LAX Coastal Area Chamber of Commerce. During her time at the Chamber she founded the group LAX Coastal Young Professionals; an organization created not only for networking and advancing professionalism in young people, but to also provide an outlet for them to donate their time and money to charitable causes. The group has participated in numerous community outreach activities such as Adopt-a-Family programs and home renovation projects. They adopted a beach in Playa del Rey where they combined a beach clean-up with a pub-crawl three times a year! All of this earned them the distinction of being voted “Most Valued Program” by the Chamber of Commerce itself.

After leaving the Chamber and starting a new career as the Marketing and Business Travel Coordinator at the Westin Los Angeles Airport while still serving as Vice-Chair of the LAX Young Professionals, she found herself eager to find a new vessel for community outreach. She was encouraged by an old mentor at the Chamber to run for City Council of Westchester/Playa del Rey and just like that, at the age of 24, she was the youngest person ever to be elected as a Neighborhood Council Officer. Although there is a certain prestige that goes along with being an elected official, Ashley takes much greater pleasure in knowing that she’s helping the voice of the community to be heard.

In her free time (which isn’t very much as you can tell) she enjoys playing kickball in the WAKA (World Adult Kickball Association) that unsurprisingly donates profits received from spectator fees and team based fund-raisers to a charity of their choice. And currently, Ashley is helping the Young Professionals plan an event with Undershares inc., an organization that provides donated underwear, socks, and diapers to families in need. Her father said that at age 3 she told him she wanted to be a U.S. Senator. While she is certainly following the right path to achieve that goal, she couldn’t be happier right where she is.

There is so much that we can all do to work to make Los Angeles a better place.

  • Hire from HIRE L.A.’s Youth for the growth of your business.
  • Get involved — plan and attend fundraisers.
  • Donate your time to helping people experiencing homelessness in Santa Monica.
  • Check out organizations like Los Angeles Urban League, 100 Black Men of Los Angeles, Inner City Law Center.

Just like the good folks on these pages, do something, own it, and let’s make Los Angeles a vibrant, caring community.

RedOne

RedOne

Things are going great right now for super producer RedOne who has recently celebrated the launch of his music label 2101 Records.  RedOne is originally from Morocco but moved to Sweden when he was 19 when he left to chase his dream of producing music.  While he found moderate success in Europe, RedOne struggled and was about to throw in the towel when he suddenly skyrocketed to success with the popularity of Lady Gaga.  RedOne produced and wrote several songs on the chart topping album, The Fame.  He’s incredibly thankful for Gaga and feels like she is a “living legend” and a musical genius.  They began working together, clicked and created some very interesting music.

Since Gaga, RedOne has finished producing Nicole Scherzinger’s new album and he says it’s going to be better than her DWTS performances!  RedOne’s first artist on his new 2101 label is Mohombi who is young, up-and-coming and thoroughly gorgeous!  Imagine a tall, fit, beautiful in the face, young man with a basketball player’s body who can sing and dance like Justin Timberlake.  This sexy songster is more than model hot as he sings his infectious melodies.  He’s had a turbulent start to life as he and his family had to flee war torn Congo in search of safer surroundings in Sweden.  He then chased his dream to Los Angeles where he met up with fellow pseudo-Swede, RedOne.  His first single “Bumpy Ride” pays homage to his turbulent assent and has a Caribbean sound and beat.  The video was shot in Miami and could easily be mistaken for Cayman or Jamaica.  RedOne says that Mohombi is getting an incredible reaction from his music, his style of dance, and his performances and says, “he’s a superstar in the making, very charming, smart and an incredible entertainer”.

Outside of work, RedOne is focused on his family who is currently in Morocco.  He splits his time between Los Angeles, Morocco and Holland and considers himself a global citizen. He loves L.A. for the creativity and the weather but everything about him is global.  His favorite foods are sushi and traditional Moroccan food.  He goes to Nobu a lot but has yet to find a Moroccan restaurant  in Los Angeles that compares to his wife’s cooking at home.  However, when he’s in New York, he likes Le Souk.

This is Why He’s Hot
•RedOne’s credits include producing and co-writing 7 songs and 5 back to back hit singles on Lady Gaga’s The Fame album, which to date has sold over 10 million copies worldwide.
•RedOne earned five #1 songs in 12 months for “Just Dance,” “Poker Face,” “Love Game,” “Bad Romance” and “We Are the World 25 for Haiti.”
•RedOne earned two 2010 Grammy Awards for Best Dance Recording (“Poker Face”), Best Electronic/Dance Album (The Fame, Lady Gaga)
•RedOne was personally requested by Quincy Jones and Lionel Richie to produce a contemporary version of the iconic philanthropic anthem, “We Are The World,”  with more than 80 of the world’s biggest stars.
•RedOne receives more accolades for more than 10 million album sales and 25 million singles downloaded with Lady Gaga.

Catching Up with Johnny

Catching Up with Johnny

The Goo Goo Dolls

Guess who is back on the airwaves? The Goo Goo Dolls have returned with a new album and are dominating the playlists of pop radio stations worldwide. It has been a long four years since Johnny Rzeznik (lead guitarist, vocalist), Robby Takac (bassist) and Mike Malinin (drummer) have released a new album. Of course you remember their previous titles. Who could forget the hit song “Iris” which originally appeared on the “City Of Angels” soundtrack and spent almost a year on the Billboard charts, including a phenomenal 18 weeks at #1.  “Iris” was also nominated record and song of the year by the 1998 Grammy Awards.  The tracks “Slide”, “Black Balloon” and “Broadway,” were all top ten hits on the Billboard charts.

And now, with no further delay, “Something for the Rest of Us” is here! It was written mostly by Johnny himself, and recorded over the last two years. “The theme of the album unfolded to me” says Johnny, “I wanted to address those who have been deeply effected by these tough economic conditions, those who are filled with fear and uncertainty of what tomorrow may bring. So many people are really hurting and with two wars that seem to have no end in sight. Those are the people I wrote about, from their perspective.”

Turning words and intention into action, the Goo Goo Dolls proactively chose to lower the cost of their concert tickets to make a night-out-on-the-town more affordable to the average fan. They also ask concert-goers to support USA Harvest by bringing canned goods and non-perishable food items to the concert. All the food that is collected goes to local shelters. “On average, we deliver two to three thousand cans each night we play!” says Johnny proudly. The concept is a very simple one: Move food from people who have too much, to those who have much too little!  A little effort and planning by each concert-goer makes a big difference to local communities.

If history repeats itself, as it so often does, the accomplishment of previous ballads predict the bright success of newly released love songs on this new album. Curious to know if being romantic comes easy for someone like Johnny who writes deep lyrics such as ‘…I’d give up forever to touch you…You’re the closest to heaven that I’ll ever be…’, Johnny answered “I have to work at it like all men do. I think all men try to be romantic although most women say we don’t. I love my girlfriend and since I am away from her a lot, I send her little love notes to let her know I am thinking about her.” Wow, that is really sweet. Take note fellas, this is super simple and it works!  Ladies, didn’t you melt just a little?

So what kind of music does Johnny listen too these days? “Hmm, well let me flip through my recently played list on my computer… The Flaming Lips (Transmissions From the Satellite Heart), Regina Spektor, The Killers, The Hold Steady, and The Black Keys…all I love!”

As an artist who is familiar with creative blocks, Johnny offers these words of wisdom for any artists who’s struggling: “Don’t chase a trend. Speak your mind. Do good work. Dig down inside until it scares you. THEN you found something special.”

After touring as long as the Goo Goo Dolls have, traveling for leisure is not high on Johnny’s list. “Home, in my own bed, is a vacation to me. All I want to do is relax and spend time under my own roof. I want to fix everything that is broken!” laughs Johnny. When pressed to imagine leisure time away from home, Johnny replies, “My next trip I think will be to Italy and Rome to really check it out… eventually.” A quick review of cities and dates of the current “Something for the Rest of Us Tour” and it is easy to see why a “stay-cation” is high on Johnny’s list of priorities.

KEVIN MORRA

How did Faye Resnick Design first get started?

I have always had a love for art and art history. In the past, I had the fortunate ability to travel and I owned several homes throughout Europe. It was my unique pleasure to take each one of those homes and bring forth the true essence and architecture of each country and weave it into the design. To my surprise, this lead to a barrage of friends and acquaintances asking me to design their homes. Later, I opened an antique store here in Los Angeles where I also had my design studio. Finding it impossible to do both, I went back to my first love… Design, design, design.

Why is designing in Los Angeles different than in other markets?

The difference is our unique clientele. My clients, in particular, are accustomed to ultimate luxury and staying in the hippest and most sophisticated hotels all around the world. Having said this, my clients want their homes to be as luxurious as these hotels but also to reflect their own personal style we encourage and embrace their input. Our goal is to make a magical environment for them so that when they are in their homes, they are able to relax and forget the pressures of the outside world.

As you are working with people on their homes, I imagine there must be a special trust that is formed with you and the clients of Faye Resnick Design?

Trust is essential… all of our clients entrust us with the design and privacy of their homes. Having this trust enables us to make decisions for them comfortably, knowing who they are, since most of them travel and are out of town consistently. We are very thankful to have worked with many of our clients for such a long time, strengthening this trust so that we are now working on their second and third homes… I believe this is one of the characteristics that separates FRD from most design firms; the understanding that each client has a unique sense of self. Their needs must be explored in order for us to enable them to feel as if they are waking up every morning in a surrounding that nourishes their soul and inspires them to continue to achieve greatness in there lives. We refer to this as the Discovery Phase. Everyone’s needs and lifestyle are unique and exciting; therein lies the challenge for us as designers. This developmental period is essential and it allows my firm to exceed the client’s expectations.

You certainly work with an eclectic and fascinating clientele. Do they find you or do you seek them out?

Once again, I am extremely fortunate; they somehow seem to find us. What was the approach to the design of Paris Hilton’s Hollywood Hills house? Paris is the most unique of all my clients. She is the quintessential heiress/starlet. Her work ethic is unbelievable and truly admirable. She films her shows, quite often, at her home. My firm was given two months to create an environment that not only she would love and be comfortable living in, but would also be featured in her first show, “The Simple Life”. This is why I coined the term “Industrial Couture.” We created a chic and glamorous old-Hollywood feel combining French Regency style with young contemporary, since she was 25 at the time. Keeping in mind that she grew up living at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York, we created a hotel-like environment, which for her, was how a home should feel. We are now working on her third home. The goal for this design is not only expressive of her glamorous self and lifestyle but can endure camera crews and the Hollywood parties. Paris and her sister Nicky, who is also a client, love to entertain in their homes with elaborate dinner parties for family and friends. Paris’ new home is yet to be published but is extremely sophisticated with a young, unexpected twist. Paris was intimately involved with every aspect of the design of this home, which includes the most extraordinary recording studio for her next album and an actual dance club, which, of course, is named “Club Paris.” Her 55 magazine covers surround the staircase leading to the club. The projection room is inspired by a French chateau that I fell in love with in Bordeaux, France — Baroque in style with Louis XV appointments; it is my favorite room in the whole house. Her love of animals inspired us to build a mini-version of her home for her dogs, appointed with a chandelier, wall sconces, French settees and a winding staircase that leads to a balcony, which enables her Chihuahuas to be able to have a view of the pool. The dogs love it!

What about Nick Lachey’s?

Nick’s home has a breathtaking, 360° view, which we utilized to dictate the design. Everything about this home is centered around the pool and view creating a straightforward, contemporary space. Sports are very important to Nick, so we concentrated on his projection room to showcase his sports memorabilia and since most of Nick’s friends are athletes we wanted to make it very fun for him to entertain his friends and family. Because he travels so much, being home is extremely special to him. Everything was built with comfort in mind and with a masculine and contemporary sensibility. Nick is one of the most fit and healthy individuals I have ever known, so his gym is a key factor in his life. We designed the gym to open out to the pool and the amazing view for inspiration. His media room is immense with an 18 x 12 foot custom made sofa that will envelope anyone who is fortunate enough be invited and complete with an 8 ft Stewart Screen. It also opens to the pool and is actually very James Bond in that the lights dim and drapes open or close with one touch of the remote. It is appointed with a built-in beverage bar that also has a flat screen above it so he can watch a movie at the same time as viewing a sports program. The den is also full of sports memorabilia, pool table and the perfect lounge. Nick’s pool is one of my favorite creations. We have cabanas draped for lounging that are separated by a walk-through waterfall. The entire home is set up for music indoors and outdoors with exterior televisions, a swim-up bar with pool seating that overlooks the entire cityscape and magnificent ocean view. Nick purchased his home from Seal and Heidi Klum through real estate magnate, and another client, Mauricio Umansky who is the best in the business when it comes to finding the perfect home for celebrity clients.

Entourage star Kevin Connolly?

Kevin is one of my very favorite clients to work with. His home was a typical Hollywood Hills Mid Century but now is anything but that. The Footprint was extremely challenging because a mountain surrounds most of his home. Again, we utilized this environment to our benefit by incorporating it into the design with falling waters that create an amazing backdrop to the view of the city. Kevin was very specific when it came to his pool and cabana areas. He insisted on only the most exotic details so we designed a space with a crystal fire pit that appears out of nowhere, a 300 year old Buddha atop his luxuriously draped cabana and a 60” state-of-the-art Pantel outdoor television. Water is extremely calming for him, so we created waterfalls that can be viewed from all areas of the home. He also loves to cook so we recently created a magnificent indoor-outdoor kitchen that incorporates the presence of the mountainous landscape. We designed the interiors of his home with a sophisticated gray palette and espresso woods that work perfectly to highlight his collection of vintage movie posters. Kevin’s projection room has a spectacular view of the city and once you’re there, you never want to leave.

Color Salon at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas is one of your commercial designs and yet it still retains that feeling of genuine glamour and sophistication one would expect to find within the gated walls of an exquisite private residence — not quite your average salon. Can you take us through that particular motivation?

My firm designed Color Salon for one of my very best friends, Michael Boychuck, who I have known for many years. The design was inspired by one of my favorite designers, Dorothy Draper. Her unique sense of glamour is ever-present throughout the salon. The lighting and color palette are a key element to the design. We collaborated with Fendi to create the glamorous custom furniture and kept the palette in monochromatic whites and silvers. The salon’s clients are surrounded in absolute luxury with 10 foot high Venetian Mirrors, dripping Crystal Chandeliers and beautiful Silver mosaic tiles. The attention to detail is what I am most proud of with this project. We mulled over every last detail from the grand Venetian Corona down to the custom hinges on the doors. Here, we aspire for every woman to feel as if she has finally discovered the true definition of luxury.

Speaking of Fendi, they have celebrated your artistry in the past on several occasions. Can you describe your relationship with them?

I appreciate Fendi’s diversity in design and have collaborated with them on several projects. I adore the luxurious style of a designer that uses couture styling in their furnishings. Fendi has a great attention to detail and an understanding of quality like no other furniture designer. Their pieces juxtapose perfectly with classic design and can provide that extra finishing touch needed to enhance any space.

Is there a minimum budget that your company is willing to work with?

Budget does not dictate our decision to take a project or not. Our motivation is knowing that we can bring something new and unexpected and, more importantly, that we adore the client.

Have you ever fallen in love with any of your projects so much so that it is actually difficult to say goodbye upon completion?

Unfortunately, I fall in love with all of our projects. At the end of each one, I really have separation anxiety. Fortunately, for me, most of my clients become my dear friends so I get “visitation rights.”

EAST COAST PASTIME BECOMES WEST COAST RITUAL

EAST COAST PASTIME BECOMES WEST COAST RITUAL

EAST COAST PASTIME BECOMES WEST COAST RITUAL

When we meet for our interview it is a sunny California morning and Scott Hochstadt, or “Hochy” as his friends affectionately call him, pulls up in his Black Cadillac Escalade with his dog in the back seat. Shades on, a thick head of dark hair, and rock star good looks, he is the epitome of West coast cool. However, Scott has not always called California his home. He played lacrosse at the prestigious NCAA University of Maryland. Scott was lacrosse hero to those who love the sport. He was drafted by the Buffalo Bandits and also won a sponsorship with STX.

After graduating with an art degree, he drove across the country to spend the summer in CA because he wanted to “relax and paint.” Since he was in CA already, STX sent him as a representative to various training camps on the West coast. As he traveled, Scott began to see a serious need for the development of lacrosse on the West coast, and he began to envision doing something about it. He began to develop camps and travel programs and founded the Starz Lacrosse club. After eight years Starz Lacrosse is now not only the largest club program on the West coast, but the largest club lacrosse organization in the country.

In 2006, the STARZ foundation launched “City Starz,” a program that focuses on bringing lacrosse to kids in areas that wouldn’t normally have access to lacrosse such as South Central Los Angeles. Through generous donations, the Starz Foundation provides the City Starz players with everything they need to play the sport including scholarships to attend sleepover camps. The program immediately took off, with close to 100 students involved in the first few months. It is evident that Scott’s leadership and passion for the sport has rubbed off on the participating students.

Living in LA for the past eight years, Scott is an insider in the Hollywood scene, and you’ll find him mingling with anyone from with anyone from music and television executive, down to the young cast of the new 90210. This has allowed him to bring lacrosse into the entertainment industry, and through his influence the sport is becoming progressively mainstreamed. A few years ago he was asked to help out with a lacrosse scene for the TV show House, and he now works with Adam Sandler’s company Happy Madison as a technical sports advisor, working with directors and assistants shooting scenes for various movies and shows such as 90210. With a confidently cool smile, Scott says, “Expect to see more and more lacrosse in TV and movies in years to come.” .

It is clear that Scott’s talent for and love of lacrosse which burgeoned on the East coast has now rippled beyond the boundaries of his home town and has managed to transform the awareness and enjoyment of the sport on the West coast. And he is clearly not done yet; with his creative mind and driven spirit, the history of lacrosse is not likely to stay the same after Scott Hochstadt has had his say.

Kenny Kerzner : Keys to the City

Kenny Kerzner : Keys to the City

Kenny Kerzner has been renting cars to Hollywood’s main players since 1969.
He’s charming, fit and handsome, and at the tender age of 61, he looks more like a man in his early 40’s. Kenny and his team at Midway Car Rental rent their fleet of high-end luxury vehicles to some of Hollywood’s most famous characters. He provides discreet, personal services, and has been know to take calls and handle matters at 3 a.m. when “Jane Doe” is arriving by private plane and needs some wheels. We poked and prodded for details of any scandalous dirt but, being the consummate professional he is, Kenny would only divulge that when Notorious B.I.G. was gunned down in 1997, just outside of the Peterson Automotive Museum, Kenny had provided the car.

Kenny got into the car business in 1969, and rose through the ranks with great speed. As a student at Cal State Northridge, Kenny was doing whatever he could to stay out of the Vietnam War. He ended up getting a job with Warren Axelrod just as Warren was starting Southwest Car Rental & Leasing. The original car lot was located right in the heart of Beverly Hills on Canon and Brighton. A peace-loving beatnik, Kenny was also still diligent — tirelessly working three jobs, seven days a week. He says that he “wanted to do something big” so Mr. Axelrod gave him a job washing cars in his fleet and within three years, he was running the show as the President of Southwest Car Rental. At the time, nobody was renting high-end, luxury automobiles to the Hollywood elite, and it was Kenny who got the idea up and running. In twenty years, Kenny had built the business from one location to over 14 locations in three states including California, Arizona and Colorado.

As he grew his business, Kenny had a couple of big breaks. He was standing in line to buy lunch at Food King, which was located across the street from SCR in Beverly Hills when he met David Puttnam, who is now Lord David Puttnam, the awardwinning producer of many notable films including Chariot’s of Fire and Midnight Express. Puttnam ran with the British entertainment crowd and introduced Kenny to his clique that included Adrian Lyne, Ridley Scott, George Harrison and Mick Jagger. Almost immediately, Kenny was providing cars to anyone involved in the British invasion of Hollywood.

Kenny also benefitted from his proximity to the studios. SCR stored their cars in Century City, and had so many makes and models that whenever the studios needed a car for a scene, they would call up Kenny. It was Kenny who provided pictures cars for hit movies such as Car Wash and T.V. shows such as The Six Million Dollar Man, The Rockford Files, Tales from the Crypt, ChiPs and Miami Vice.

Kenny has also been successful in winning alliances with top hotels in the area. Back when the W in Westwood was the Westwood Marquis, a young Kenny spent every day for two weeks being kicked out of the General Manager’s office for being “a nobody” until one day he was given the opportunity to provide a Lincoln Town Car with an hour’s notice. Kenny rose to the challenge and was granted a long-standing business relationship.

These days, Kenny is as active as ever. He wakes most mornings before dawn, completes his multiple hour workout, and gets on to his Blackberry to connect with his East coast clients. Kenny and the team at Midway continue to provide transportation services for L.A.’s Hollywood and business elite, and he says that his success is based on “relationship marketing.” Recently, a music star was being hounded by the paparazzi and Kenny was required to purchase a new $100,000 car, have the windows tinted limousine black and then have the car delivered to the star within two hours, the next day he had to switch to a BMW 7 Series and the next day a Bentley. It’s all just another week in the life of Kenny Kerzner, the man with the keys to the city

PEOPLE: EDUCATION

Chase Polan is an enigma. She is NOT what one would envision a purveyor of excellent educational support to look like. She’s also quick to point out she’s not a tutor. With a smile, she exclaims, “I am an educational consultant, not a tutor. There’s a difference.” There’s also a big difference between her company, Beautiful Minds Group and any other educational company on the planet — and that’s Chase.

She says, “Ideally we pursue an education to achieve a better life. As we are being sorely reminded, there are no guarantees in life. There are people who took the ‘safe’ route who are no better off than their once seemingly irresponsible, risk-taking friends.A proper education gives a student the tools necessary to live a life of passion as well as be a responsible and leading member of society.”

Beautiful Minds is not listed, and Chase is available by referral in L.A., NYC, Palm Beach and selected cities abroad. If you would like to be added to the mailing list for their quarterly letter, please email prettyinthebrain2@gmail.com
