The Recording Academy Los Angeles Chapter GRAMMY Block Party

The Recording Academy Los Angeles Chapter GRAMMY Block Party being held on Saturday, July 31 from 3-7 p.m. at The Recording Academy’s offices in Santa Monica. It will be a picnic style concert with food and drink vendors, beer garden and live performances including singer/songwriter AkaCassidy, pop singer Charice, alternative Latin group La Santa Cecilia, GRAMMY-winning artist Raphael Saadiq, and country recording artist Chuck Wicks. Musician and The Tonight Show band leader Rickey Minor will serve as the musical director. This event is open to the public and a fundraiser for the MusiCares Nashville Flood Relief Fund.

In light of the recent floods that have severely affected the Nashville area, this year’s event will now serve as a fundraiser for the newly established MusiCares® Nashville Flood Relief Fund, helping local musicians in need. Emergency assistance has already begun, and all net proceeds will be immediately distributed to help those in the music community that are victims of the flood. Additional donations to MusiCares Nashville Flood Relief may be made at the MusiCares table at the Block Party or online at www.musicares.com/NashvilleFloodRelief.

SUNSET JUNCTION FAIR 30TH ANNIVERSARY / AUGUST 21 & 22

SUNSET JUNCTION is rolling-out a special 30th ANNIVERSARY soiree in celebration of SILVERLAKE’S popular end-of-summer event – THE SUNSET JUNCTION FAIR – widely regarded as the eastside’s biggest block party, with five music stages featuring a highly eclectic mix of both national and local acts, carnival rides, food booths, beer gardens, arts & crafts, a circus, DJ’s, street performers and people watching on SATURDAY, AUGUST 21 & SUNDAY, AUGUST 22.   In honor of this milestone, a fifth “LOCALS ONLY” stage has been added, presented by THE FOLD, and featuring a wide cross-section of local buzz-bands.  Additionally, a “30 DAY COUNTDOWN TO SUNSET JUNCTION” trivia contest will kick off July 21at www.sunsetjunction.org, offering daily giveaways, including “THE PUNK ROCK RECORDING PACKAGE” courtesy of KING SIZE SOUND LABS; MILES DAVIS TRIBUTE HEADPHONES; ELVIS 75 boxed-sets and 25-song single CD’s; FREE ENTRANCE to SUNSET JUNCTION along with 30th commemorative t-shirts and other valuable prizes.

SUNSET JUNCTION traditionally embraces it’s rich diversity, which is always reflected in its musical line-up.  This year, a MILES DAVIS tribute entitled “BITCHES BREW 40th RE-MIX” will take place in celebration of the 40th Anniversary of Davis’s  jazz-rock-funk-fusion masterpiece, featuring his musical alumni with acclaimed eastside DJ’s, in bridging the classic with the contemporary.  A special laser light show will also be presented during the performance of Saturday’s Bates Stage headliner – GHOSTLAND OBSERVATORY and this year also features a strong Latin/Alternative line-up on Sunday’s Bates Stage with Girl In A Coma, Insite, Division Minuscala, Aurum and Rolling Radio.

Other highlights include Rastafarian punks’ Bad Brains, the communal/hippie vibe of Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros, retro, blue-eyed soul from Mayer Hawthorne, Electro/dance from Shiny Toy Guns, LA’s original punk-funkster’s Fishbone, classic soul from The Whispers and the Ohio Players, neo-soul artist Chris Pierce, Lee Scratch Perry, Dam Funk, The Crystal Antlers, Meshell N’degeocello, Big Daddy Kane and Sam Sparro  among others.

Over the year’s, SUNSET JUNCTION has consistently delivered the most cutting-edge, wide array of talent available, including such acclaimed acts as Lucinda Williams, X, Sonic Youth, Kinky, The Buzzcocks, The Black Keys, Hank III, Ben Harper, Conor Oberst, Sly & Robbie, The Cramps, Elliott Smith, Mike Watt, The New York Dolls, Chaka Khan,  Mary Wilson, Rilo Kiley, Broken Social Scene, Dave Alvin, The Airborne Toxic Event, The Blasters, Los Lobos and more.

Sunset Junction is proud to produce the 30th Anniversary of Silverlake’s beloved Sunset Junction Fair.  The annual event was initially created to help ease tensions in the neighborhood, but has since grown largely in both attendance and scope. Revenue  earned from the fair each year is invested right back into the community.   The funds continue to help support programs designed to re-focus and educate at risk youth with comprehensive job training, soccer and sports programs, community beautification, art, safety and clean-up projects.  To date, completed projects include 25 murals, after school sports and recreation programs, the Sunset Junction Soccer Club, job training, tree planting on Sunset Blvd., the building and maintenance of Triangle Park, painting murals for local businesses, ridding the area of graffiti, overall neighborhood clean-up and safety initiatives.   If interested in learning how you can help support the good works of Sunset Junction, please reach out to sunsetjunction@sunsetjunction.org.

Hollywood will be wafting with enticing aromas on Sunday, September 5th when the inaugural Los Angeles Times Celebration of Food & Wine turns the streets of Paramount Pictures Studio into a day-long culinary extravaganza.  From true epicureans to those who simply love good food, wine and fun, the Celebration will deliver all the key ingredients needed to satisfy Angelenos’ demanding and varied appetites. The Times Food section’s writers and editors, celebrity chefs, a wide range of award-winning restaurants and world-class vintners will serve up new twists and classic favorites. Throw in a special VIP tasting, some of L.A.’s hottest food trucks and garnish it all with a cool, homegrown headliner for a bit of musical dessert and you’ve got a great way to end the summer.
“When it comes to food, Southern California is the most exciting place in the country and maybe even the world,” said the Times’ Food Editor Russ Parsons. “We have great farmers, markets, wineries, and wonderful cooks and restaurants from almost any nation. What we want to do with this event is share our enthusiasm about the things we love the most with as many people as we can.”
Multiple outdoor stages will feature an eclectic mix of live cooking demonstrations from the likes of Suzanne Goin (A.O.C., Lucques, Tavern, The Hungry Cat) and Mark Peel (Campanile, The Tar Pit) and attendees can sample delectables from more than 100 local, national and international food and beverage exhibitors. Secrets and recipes from the Times’ test kitchen will be shared and Russ Parsons will moderate conversations with culinary tastemakers. Other participants include Ludo Lefebvre, the mastermind behind “pop-up” French restaurant LudoBites, ‘Top Chef’ Season 6 winner Michael Voltaggio, John Sedlar of Rivera, Jimmy Shaw of Loteria Grill, and Jon Shook and Vinny Dotolo of Animal.
For those obsessed with the truck trend, Don Chow Tacos (Chinese/Mexican fusion), The Sweets Truck (bakeshop and gourmet coffeehouse) and The Buttermilk Truck (homemade breakfast delights) will be on hand, while beer and liquor enthusiasts will have access to hundreds of the best microbrews and spirits. Master sommeliers and crafty mixologists will ensure wine lovers can enjoy unique pairings and cocktail aficionados can imbibe artistic creations.
The event will also offer a specially-ticketed, intimate VIP area featuring artisanal tastings from more than 20 premier Southern California restaurants and vintners.

San Diego may be known for its beach scene, but those wanting a break from the sand can still soak up the sun while enjoying a relaxed vibe at the Ivy Rooftop at Andaz San Diego. Launching Memorial Day weekend on May 30, guests can cool off in the pool or stretch out on a cushioned bed every Sunday beginning at 2 p.m. through September.

“Pool Party Sundays capture everything that’s remarkable about summer including great food, outdoor entertainment, socializing and relaxation,” said Rusty Middleton, general manager of Andaz. “People generally head to the beach during the day and downtown at night but now we are offering the best of both worlds at the Ivy Rooftop.
